Part O: Susan Carew Submission to OAIC, State Violence, Totalitarianism and Conflict Resolution
This video discusses Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation Bill 2023. Susan expresses her concern and the implications for the complete removal of freedom of speech. The metaphor that comes to mind is a woman being gagged and raped. This Bill has the seeds of real violations of human rights where innocent people can be incarcerated without a crime (hence snap lockdowns). She discusses her experience meeting those violated by authorities e.g. Myanmar (Burma) where innocent people were jailed for protest FOR democracy. She has met Iraqi doctors from war zones, soldiers in Rotary carrying guilt from killing children. A soldier from Afghanistan chose to shoot over heads and wouldn’t kill the people. He witnessed hangings, shooting (target practice), T-shirting (de-skinned) etc. A elderly Polish woman as a child was with a group blind-folded by Nazi’s about to be shot. She played up and it distracted them, they were saved by fate. With Rotary, Susan went to Tuol Sleng Prison in Cambodia and shown torture chambers. The photos were arranged in lines on boards displaying faces of grandparents, parents, children all killed perceived as enemies of the State. The Rotary participants visited the Killing Fields. Rotary Peace fellows were shown torture techniques. Susan is researching Nazi Germany and how soldiers can just shoot civilians easily without a backward glance. The film was entitled Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial. Refer https://www.netflix.com/au/title/81561941 Hitler was homeless (men’s shelter) in Austria and rose through the unions. He was not elected to be the Chancellor but given the position (by who?). Susan speaks of austerity caused by crisis in a country to empower totalitarianism to rise. Towards the end of the war it has been documented by the CIA Hitler lived on. Sixty million, mostly civilians, were killed during WWII. The same happened in Afghanistan using religious extremism. She references the Afghan files and whistle-blower (David McBride, lawyer) going to jail. BBC reported McBride said: “I did not break my oath to the people of Australia and the soldiers that keep us safe,” Refer https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-69006714 This reveals weak whistle-blower laws and protections for those working in the public interest. In addition, Susan was informed by an Australian who trained as a US Delta soldier explaining they trained on dummies of women and children. They are supposed to be defending women and children not learning how to desensitise and kill them.
Susan explains that the notion of power is really powerlessness parading as power and augmenting power through weaponry. In truth they are frightened. She gives the example of Saddam Hussein, as a dictator he looked strong (as did Hitler) then start losing the war, take away their power and they crumble ie. Saddam was found in the hole, he was defeated. He was afraid and fragile. Power is a false identity that many cleave to, it is not the real power (know thyself).
She states the people do not want tyranny in Australia. The Australian people have not experienced this type of violence and human rights violations on a large scale. However, others from multicultural societies may have their fled countries to come to Australia for safety, having witnessed the horrors of conflict.
The real power is in our nature, it is not in our violence. She discusses conflict resolution to learn to deeply listen to heart.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner does not want to hear what she is saying. Susan is open to being surprised.
She received their final letter 1/8/24 and it is clear they are not listening.
