Definition:
Misinformation: False or misleading (getting the facts wrong) (American Psychological Society)
Disinformation: Is false information which is deliberately intended to mislead, intentionally misstating the facts.
Will a person go to jail for sharing online? Key issues are found in the definitions of misinformation and disinformation such as getting facts wrong. Whose facts are wrong? Business interests/government vs public interest experts or those with opinions? The facts about Hitler reports him having died by gun shot (not cyanide) yet a CIA document reveals he lived on in Columbia. When new information comes in the facts change. Is justice retrospective. People hold their perceptions/beliefs as true. We aren’t looking at what we truly know, we work on what we believe. Everybody on all sides believe what they have to say or do. If they don’t believe it is true the weight of possibilities convince them or they trust the authority. Fear can turns into the party line. That is totalitarian. Susan states that you could argue that Covid was disinformation. Business interests don’t want to lose investments or share prices falling. Does this work against what is in the public interest? The problem is there is a desire for people to be on a global business internet talking to ensure data is monetorised for profit but making sure players responsible for causing harm are not scrutinised. We witness suppression of freedom of speech becoming ‘misinformation’ or ‘disinformation’ to stop the spread of truths. It is a strategy that won’t work. The more they are suppressed and jailed, the more people move away from the internet. Priming of the public of the next event e.g. Contagion (2011), Civil War (2024). We are taught ‘monkey see monkey do’ and follow the pied piper. Walls erected in history by intolerance/fear. She discusses control or going with the flow. Disinformation is a common tool in intelligence creating propaganda and espionage in relation to other countries deemed ‘the enemy’. The Cold War with Russia/China is amplified. Deception and lying is common in media, PR, politics. Susan questions has there ever been said an honest thing? Only truth sets you free. The Bill seems to indicate that it is designed to protect business/political interests. She points to the film Wag the Dog. Does our data go to the regulator is that OAIC? This can create targeting of innocent people which can be subject to criminalisation. Voting and referendum is in the scope opens up knowledge of voting preferences. When full information is not there questions arise. The digital Identity literature profiles identity as mandatory in terms of zero trust. Is that true to place the onus of proof on the public or rather IT/business/government?
